Round Holding magnets are effectively a strong single sided magnet. By having a steel surround placed around the magnet, the magnetic field is deflected causing the magnetism to be stronger on one side of the magnet than the other.
The steel surround also provides protection for the raw magnets inside allowing it to be protected from impacts, avoiding chipping or cracking.

These are widely used to create closures both inside as cupboard catches in kitchens and even outdoors as gate and latch magnets.
